Mythology & Tradition

She is beauty made conscious of itself.

The force that draws things together. That makes the world want to be seen, touched, and known.

The Romans called her Venus.

Venus was born of sea foam, rising from the waters already whole. Goddess of love, beauty, desire, and the arts. She does not chase. She attracts.

The Greeks knew her as Aphrodite.

 Her power unsettled even the other gods. Homer writes of her laughter, her golden light, the way she moves through the world and everything turns toward her.

In Vedic tradition, she is Shukra

The planet of refinement, pleasure, and the capacity to recognize beauty in all its forms. Shukra governs the arts, sensuality, and the wisdom that comes through the body's knowing.

In the Mesopotamian tradition, she was Inanna

 Queen of Heaven and Earth, who descended into the underworld and returned transformed.

Clarissa Pinkola Estés, in Women Who Run With the Wolves (1992), traces this descent pattern through myth and story as the soul's necessary journey into depth before it can rise again into full creative power.

Astrology

In astrology, Venus rules Taurus and Libra.

In Taurus, she is sensory and grounded, the pleasure of the body, the beauty of the earth.

In Libra, she is relational and aesthetic, the search for harmony, balance, and the perfect form.

She is exalted in Pisces, where love becomes boundless and devotional. She governs what we value, what we find beautiful, and how we give and receive love.

Rachel Pollack, in Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom (1980), describes The Empress as the great mother of the natural world, the one who reminds us that life is meant to be lived with pleasure and presence.
