He is the force that arrives without warning.

The lightning bolt of insight. The sudden crack in the wall that lets the future in.

The Greeks knew him as Ouranos.

Ouranos is the primordial sky, the vast expanse above the earth, the first of the gods to hold dominion over the heavens. In myth, Ouranos is overthrown by his son Kronos, the old order broken open so that something new can emerge. It is the essential Uranian story: revolution as the price of evolution.

Unlike the classical planets, Uranus was not known to the ancient world. Uranus was discovered in 1781, in the same era as the American and French Revolutions, the Industrial Revolution, and the birth of modern democracy. He arrived with the age of radical change. He has never left.

Joseph Campbell, in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), writes of the call to adventure, the moment that disrupts the ordinary world and sets the hero on a new path. Uranus is that call. Sudden, unmistakable, impossible to unhear.

Astrology

In astrology, Uranus rules Aquarius.

Uranus governs revolution, innovation, awakening, and the sudden liberation from what no longer serves. Uranus moves slowly through the zodiac, spending approximately seven years in each sign, reshaping entire generations.

Where Saturn builds structures, Uranus breaks them. Not out of chaos, but out of necessity. The structures that fall under Uranus were already hollow.

Rachel Pollack, in Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom (1980), describes The Fool as pure potential, the soul before it has been shaped by experience, open to everything.
