He is the force that removes the edges.

That takes what is solid and returns it to the sea. That asks: what remains when everything you thought you were has been washed away?

The Romans called him Neptune.

God of the sea, of storms, of the deep waters beneath the world. Neptune holds the trident, the three-pronged symbol of the three realms: sky, earth, and the underworld below the waves. He is not a god of surfaces. Neptune governs what moves beneath them.

The Greeks knew him as Poseidon.

Poseidon is the earth-shaker, the one whose moods move through the ocean floor and emerge as trembling ground. In him, the sea is not peaceful. The sea is power, depth, and the ancient memory of what the world was before land rose from the waters.

In Vedic tradition, Neptune's energy resonates with the principle of maya, the veil of illusion that both conceals and reveals the nature of reality. To see through maya is not to reject the world. It is to love it more clearly.

Joseph Campbell, in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), writes of the return from the depths, the moment when the hero, having dissolved into the mystery, must find a way to bring what was learned back to the surface. Like Neptune, the journey into the deep is not the end. It is the beginning of a different kind of knowing.

Astrology

In astrology, Neptune rules Pisces.

Neptune governs dreams, mysticism, compassion, illusion, and the dissolution of boundaries between self and other, between the personal and the universal. Neptune moves so slowly through the zodiac that it spends approximately fourteen years in each sign, shaping the spiritual imagination of entire generations.

Where Uranus awakens through shock, Neptune awakens through surrender. The boundaries do not break. They simply become permeable.

Tarot

The High Priestess (II)

Like Neptune, The High Priestess sits at the threshold between the seen and unseen. She does not speak. She holds. She knows that some truths can only be received in stillness.

Rachel Pollack, in Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom (1980), describes The High Priestess as the guardian of the unconscious, the one who holds what cannot yet be spoken, the keeper of the mystery that dissolves all certainty.

Neptune as the pull of the tidal unconscious. The dreams that arrive uninvited. The knowing that has no name.

The Hanged Man (XII)

Neptune as the willing surrender. Like The Hanged Man, Neptune asks us to release our grip on what we think we know and wait, suspended, for a different kind of sight.

Stones of Neptune

These are stones of deep ocean, pale mist, and the luminous dark of the dreaming mind.

Aquamarine, labradorite, and blue lace agate carry his dissolving frequency. They are stones of compassion, intuition, and the gentle opening of the heart to what cannot be seen but can always be felt.

To work with a Neptune stone is to stop insisting on certainty and begin trusting the current.
