The messenger of the gods, the guide of souls, the patron of travelers, merchants, thieves, and poets.

The Romans called him Mercury. Fleet-footed and winged, Mercury carries the caduceuss.  The staff of two entwined serpents that became the symbol of medicine, negotiation, and the crossing of thresholds.

The Greeks knew him as Hermes, psychopomp and trickster, the only Olympian who could descend into the underworld and return freely.

In Vedic tradition, Mercury is Budha, the planet of intelligence, discrimination, and the precise use of language. He governs the mind's capacity to sort, analyze, and communicate what it perceives.

Joseph Campbell, in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), identifies the guide figure, the Hermes archetype, as the one who appears at the threshold to show the hero the way. Not to walk the path for them. Only to illuminate it.

Astrology

In astrology, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the signs of the quick mind and the discerning eye. He governs communication, thought, writing, travel, and the nervous system.
