Mars is the great warrior.

Mythology & Tradition

He is the force that acts.

Not the force that thinks, or feels, or waits. The force that moves.

The Romans called him Mars.

God of war, yes. But also god of agriculture, of the boundaries that protect what is cultivated, of the courage required to defend what matters. He was the father of Romulus, the founder of Rome. In him, destruction and creation are not opposites.

The Greeks knew him as Ares.

Fierce, impulsive, and often alone on the battlefield. Where Athena brought strategy, Ares brought fire. He was not always loved by the other gods. But he was always felt.

In Vedic tradition, he is Mangala.

The red planet, the planet of energy, ambition, and the will to survive. Mangala governs the blood, the muscles, and the drive that pushes the soul forward when everything in it wants to stop.

Joseph Campbell, in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), writes of the threshold guardian, the force the hero must face and integrate before the journey can continue. Mars is that force. Not the enemy. The initiator.

Astrology

In astrology, Mars rules Aries and is the traditional ruler of Scorpio.

In Aries, he is pure forward motion. The spark before the thought. The yes before the plan.

In Scorpio, he is depth and intensity. The will that does not break. The force that transforms through pressure.

He is exalted in Capricorn, where drive meets discipline and ambition becomes achievement.

Tarot

The Tower (XVI)

The sudden force that breaks what has become a prison. Not destruction for its own sake. Liberation through rupture.

Rachel Pollack, in Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom (1980), describes The Tower as the moment when false structures collapse so that something true can be built in their place.

The Emperor (IV)

Mars as sovereign will.

The one who holds the boundary, commands the field, and takes responsibility for what he protects.

Five of Wands

The friction of competing forces. The energy of Mars before it finds its direction.

Stones of Mars

These are stones of red earth and iron will.   They are red, black, and iron-rich, stones of courage and protection.  The will to act.

They strengthen the body. They sharpen the mind.

They remind the spirit that it is capable of more than it believes.
