Jupiter is the great expander.

Mythology & Tradition

He is the force that opens.

That widens the horizon, lifts the ceiling, and says: there is more than you have yet imagined.

The Romans called him Jupiter.

King of the gods, lord of sky and thunder. Jupiter holds the highest seat and governs with largesse. He is not a god of war or cunning. He is a god of abundance, justice, and the generous order of things.

The Greeks knew him as Zeus.

Father of gods and mortals.  Zeuss presides over the cosmic order.                   His thunderbolt is not cruelty. It is clarity. The sudden illumination that reorganizes everything.

In Vedic tradition, he is Brihaspati.

The great teacher, the guru of the gods.  The planet of wisdom and dharma.  The expansion of consciousness through learning.  Brihaspati governs sacred knowledge, philosophy, and the grace that comes from living in alignment with truth.

Joseph Campbell, in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), describes the mentor figure, the wise elder who appears to offer the hero a gift, a map, a blessing before the great journey. Jupiter is that figure. The one who believes in you before you believe in yourself.

Astrology

In astrology, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and is the traditional ruler of Pisces.

In Sagittarius, he is the philosopher, the traveler, the seeker of meaning across cultures and continents.

In Pisces, he is the mystic, the dreamer, the one who dissolves boundaries and opens the soul to the infinite.

Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, where abundance becomes nourishment and expansion becomes care. He governs luck, growth, higher learning, and the faith that the universe is fundamentally generous.

Rachel Pollack, in Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom (1980), describes The Wheel as the great cosmic pattern, the force that moves beneath all human striving, always turning toward new possibility.
